Obama speech: Shutdown to disrupt US economy significantly

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - After what appeared to be right from the start of the new week a 'cul de sac' road to reach any sort of compromise between Republicans and Democrats, in order to prevent a US shutdown, President Barack Obama gave a public speech at the White House to announce the conditions the US will have to face under a temporary shutdown.

Obama first said that under government shutdown social security checks will still be sent out, US troops will remain on duty, while social Security, Medicare, mail and gov't operations on national security will continue if government shutdown.

Obama also said the US government office buildings will close during shutdown. Obama said "a shutdown will have a very real economic impact on real people — right away."

Obama made clear that it does not have to happen. "All of this is entirely preventable if the House chooses to do what the Senate has already done" he said. Obama added: "An important part of Affordable Care Act takes effect tomorrow no matter what Congress decides to do", adding "you can't shut it down."

In a rather tense tone, Obama said: "One faction of one party in one house of congress in one branch of government doesn’t get to shut down the entire government..." Finally, Obama said to Republicans: "You don't get to extract a ransom for doing your job", while highlighting he still hopes an 11th hour deal.

The speech comes after the US Senate rejected the latest US House proposal to delay Obama care law, a decision that somehow meant the final act leading up to what will be the 18th US government shutdown in history, the last being on 1996.
